Where to find Winter Wonderland

Growing up in Canada means getting used to having both feet firmly planted in the snow. Winters can be harsh and we may be tempted to do as the bears do and simply hibernate until spring. Trust me, I've been there. But over the years, there's been one thing I've been looking forward to during the cold season; Saint-Côme En Glace! (Translated: Saint-Côme in ice.)

What is Saint-Côme En Glace?

Saint-Côme En Glace is a 16 days ice sculpture festival and it is the perfect activity to enjoy on a cold winter day. In the first few days, you get to see the process of turning blocks of ice into beautiful art pieces. These ice blocks are taken from a nearby lake with the use of saws and machinery. By the end of the festival, you can walk around and admire the details put into every piece. These sculptures vary in height and style, from lifesize horses to functional ice slides. My favorite thing to do at this festival is to get a hot cup of cocoa and talk with the local artists. Many families work together on their sculptures and have been doing this event for decades.

Is this safe during Covid-19?

The current pandemic has shut down a lot of events. Fortunately, due to the nature of the festival, Saint-Côme En Glace is still on. Having the festival outside means there is more space for everyone to safely walk around. The event organizers also make sure that guidelines and regulations are followed, such as limiting the number of people allowed on ice structures.

When is this festival happening?

This year, the festival is being held from February 12 to 27. This will be the 40th edition of the festival, which started back in 1967. The breathtaking event includes 150 ice sculptors, working on more than 85 sculptures. These ice sculptures will line up the main street in Saint-Côme, a small village in Québec. The event is free for anyone to attend. For more information on the history behind the festival or more details on current events, you can visit the official website.
